One of my new favorites is to work with clients that are itty-bitty. I absolutely love doing newborn lifestyle sessions. I’ve learned over time that I love seeing them in their environment – the babies are more comfortable and so are the new mommies and daddies! Visiting little taylen’s home for his newborn session was especially rewarding because I also got to spend time with his older brother, javen. If you ever want to see an excited and proud big brother, just spend some time with this big guy! He is so full of love for the people in his life and he lights up when he’s around his new baby brother. Thank you to amber + trent for allowing me into their home to spend time with their squishy-cheeked new bundle! He is absolutely precious!! I love you guys.

the story of a birthday …
It is 2 am and I am awake. The dim lights barely illuminate the outline of the ceiling and the room is quiet with the exception of one sound. I lie on my back and listen to the soft pattern of a heartbeat. Lub-duh…lub-duh…lub-duh…lub-duh. The sound is mesmerizing and I find myself beginning to drift into memory. There is no sound in the world that matches this one – no other pattern of beating that can wrap itself around your body and soul the way that this one does. As the soft, steady sound of a heartbeat continues to fill the room, I am reflecting and thinking and remembering and praying. Every new parent feels the anxiety of the unknown – who will my child resemble, will my daughter have my eyes, will my son play sports, will I be a good mom… But when a couple has only felt the anxiety of finally seeing a pregnancy become a birthday, the sound of a heartbeat filling the room is their entire universe. It is this anticipation that has a pulse of its own in their lives.
To be here, in this hospital room filled with the sound of their unborn daughter’s heartbeat is everything…
For my younger brother, Jason, and his wife, Aubrie, the long wait for labor to progress seems to fit their path to parenthood. We all say that everything will work out the way that it’s meant to – that it’s all in God’s plan – that time will reveal what is destined to be. But sometimes those words become the anthem of a life. And sometimes those words are the only words to cling to. In a year of necessary blind faith — a sudden shift in career, a relocation, a list of disappointments in heath and conception attempts, a mother’s cancer, a future brother-in-law’s deployment, an abundance of confidence-breaking experiences — it has truly been a journey that only God could prescribe.
And now, a year after the crux of the hardest part comes the amazing part…the birth of Jaycie Ann. She took her time about it. After being in the hospital for over 24 hours, she finally arrived at 7:19 pm on May 23. She is beautiful and she is an amazing gift that encompasses all of the patience and hopes and dreams and faith in God’s plan.
I am posting some of their birth journey here on the blog, but look for the birth story photo compilation that I will be posting in the next couple of days. There are no words to describe this experience – to be on the “outside” and watching the miracle of birth rather than experiencing it with my own children. And to Jason+Aubrie+Jaycie, I say thank you. Thank you for loving me enough to allow me to be a part of this journey with you…
kandi+david // the wedding
You may have noticed that the blog has been extremely quiet lately….but I finally have something to share! This spring I had the privilege of photographing the wedding of kandi+david. They’ve been patiently waiting for an extended preview of their gallery and here it is! Thank you, again, for allowing me to be a part of your wonderful day (in the middle of a crazy dance recital-filled weekend)! It was a beautiful wedding and the setting was perfect!

jake+collin
Every year I have been blessed to work with these two handsome guys. They are spunky and adorable and ornery, but we wouldn’t want it any other way (I’m sure their mom would agree)! It has been such a blessing to follow them with the camera and to watch them grow. I love looking at my calendar to see I have a session with these two coming up, because I know we’ll giggle throughout the time we’re together! Can’t wait ’til next year…!

amanda + eddie // the wedding
Sometimes you can just look at a couple and you see it. The love, the joy, the way they see one another, they way they breathe differently when they are near one another. All of these are true for amanda+eddie. They are a couple that is a joy to be around. They make me smile and so does their easy going love for one another. Throughout their wedding day I watched the tears in eddie’s eyes and the smile on amanda’s face and I smiled, every time. There’s just something that warms your heart when you’re near a couple like this. Thank you, again, amanda+eddie, for allowing me to be a part of your love story.

new baby // lifestyle mini
One of my new favorite things is to do a lifestyle session – capturing moments and life in their natural environment. Last weekend I had the privilege of working with the newest addition for the veerhusens in a lifestyle mini session. SO precious!! Perfect in every way and absolutely adorable! I am so thankful that I was able to enter their home and capture a few bits of their life with baby number three.

shelby+robert // a romantic wedding
Romantic. Elegant. Vintage. Classic. ~All are words that I would use to describe the wedding of shelby+robert. Sometimes it is difficult for me to explain how a wedding feels, but I try to do it through my photographs. I look for ways to capture both personality and the tiny moments – those glimpses and other fleeting moments that create a vignette to remember. One of my absolute favorite moments was when the groom saw the bride for the first time. I had tears in my eyes as I witnessed the love he felt for his bride-to-be and the emotion that overcame him. I don’t photograph many fall weddings, but when I do I am thankful that they’re as beautiful as shelby+robert’s! Thank you, again, for allowing me to be a part of your gorgeous wedding!

the dose family
It never fails that extended family sessions are interesting and fun, but the Dose family’s session was something special. So laid back, relaxed and willing to do…just about anything! The grandkids definitely had a laugh posing on and jumping off of something conveniently placed posts. Thanks again to theresa + treva for arranging this session. It was great to see all of you and spend time working with your awesome family!

the heine family // a morning at the lake
Throughout the years I have been fortunate enough to shoot in some beautiful places and I have been on-location in some great cities. However, people often forget that beauty is right in our back yards. I recently had the chance to work with the Heine family at a small lake just outside of my rural town. The morning was gorgeous and the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. Thanks to cynthia + tena for arranging this extended family session. It was so much fun to work with your amazing family!

the friesens
Fun, laid back, and easy to work with. Those are just a few of the ways I would describe the Friesen family. I love working with this family because I always know I’ll be smiling when I’m around them. We had a little bit of extra fun in this session and attempted our own “American Gothic” shot. Am I Grant Wood (the artist behind the original)? No way. But it was fun to play! Thanks again, dan+darcy – it was great to work with you again!
